The Preston Salon is located in the heart of Clayton offering a full range of hair services. We hear it all the time. People walk into Preston Salon Spa and are struck by a look that is both modern and classic. The reaction is understandable: Our building was originally an art deco 1930s Amoco station - which Steven meticulously transformed into a beautiful salon. The station's original structure has been preserved, while a soothing color scheme and inviting natural woods and metal accents highlight the interior.

I'm only leaving one star because there is no option to leave ZERO STARS. The manager/owner here is one of the most foul people I have yet come across in my life. I witnessed him treating another professional very disrespectfully and that alone is enough for me to NEVER recommend this salon to anybody. And to STEVEN KOOTMAN: Respect is something you should have learned before grade school, it's very disappointing that you have yet to acquire this skill. Learn how to treat and talk to people kindly if you are going to run a business.

Steven is an artist! My mom and I have been going to him for years and always love our hair when he's done. He listens to what you want and asks all the right questions. If he has an idea that is different from what you've talked about, he lets you know and communicates really well. His staff is wonderful too. We love Tess!

At first glance this place seems amazing. The stylists are fantastic. The owner and name sake, Steven Preston on the other hand is anything but. If you go to work here be warned. I worked there for a couple months and was screwed financially at every turn. My last check was supposed to be nearly 800 dollars and just received a 268 dollar paycheck for it. Hes rich so u cant fight him, always has a verbal spin as to why hes the victim.
The products he uses on back bar are supposed to be ORIBE but puts generic products in the bottles and sells it to you full price. I never got paid commission for selling his products, he sells services, such as straightening saying it's one thing when it's another, says what ever extension brand your looking for he carries which is a lie beyond belief.
If you r looking for a new salon or want a new stylist job, look elsewhere. Hes there for noone besides himself. I have seen him screw people out of money left and right, just like his bar SIAM. People showed up with bodyguards to be paid. Be warned

Zach is fierce when it comes to coloring and cutting my impossible fine hair. I had resigned myself to mediocrity. Thank goodness my friend got married and used him for her big day. She looked stunning and I've been relying on him ever since. I recently moved and yes, he's worth the drive! Edit: Dec 2017. Zach moved to Govero Salons and I followed him. He's still a brilliant stylist.

This is, by far, one of the best salons in the St. louis area. Steven and his staff have been amazing for at least the past 10 years that I have been going to this salon. Believe me, because I have tried many other salons in between, when either on a whim or a major budget, or between stylists that have come and gone, but I always end up coming back to Preston because I know that I can expect excellent results every time.
The minute I walk in to this salon in the heart of Clayton, I know I am in good hands, as I feel an air of calmness, appreciation, and reassurance come over me every time. I also love how Steven makes a point of showing his personalized appreciation for his customers' continued business, unlike many other cookie-cutter salons. He and his staff often go out of their way to get me in with a stylist, even with my insane schedule, and very often at the last minute.
Keep in mind, I am a very busy attorney with 3 children, and my schedule would normally not let me be this blonde! But Steven and his staff somehow always make it happen, and I am so thankful for that. I am also naturally quite dark haired and I am very picky about how my platinum blonde highlights turn out. Most recently, Cheryl has been absolutely amazing with BOTH her platinum blonde highlights AND her excellent precision cuts - an awesome plus! Thank you again, Preston Salon!

This salon has a very relaxing setting and nice amenities but obviously most people go to specific salons for the stylist and I love Ray. He is so talented, super nice and able to style all hair types. But he really went above and beyond today! I lost my voice over the week and could not talk at all. He provided tea with his personal stash of honey and provided me herbal peppermint oil for my nose. It was just so kind and this plus his exceptional skills makes him a superb stylist!

Just went to Preston Salon for the first time a week ago. My stylist moved there from where I'd first met him. It took about half a second to decide to follow him to Preston and I am glad I did. It's near Clayton, but don't worry--there is a parking lot in the back. The salon's look is minimalist. No knick-knacks here, which is good, because it feels almost crowded in some areas.
The employees were so happy to be there at 9 a.m. on a Saturday--seems like a great place to work! Complimentary wine! Don't worry, it isn't worked into the price. It's two buck chuck. : I wish the prices were a little lower, and while this is beyond my control, it actually isn't. I could go elsewhere. But of course I won't.

The worst salon ever to experience. Horrible staff, rude manager, the worst hairstylists, and over priced services. To top all of that, they will cancel on you at their own convenience. Avoid Zach Taylor especially, he is the rudest and most unprofessional and will talk to you like he is doing you a favor. AVOID THIS PLACE!

If I could give less than one star I totally would. I found this place on google as somewhere close to me so that is why I picked it. I went in for a drastic change (red hair to blond). I knew it would be a process but the guy told me it could be done potentially in stages. I said it was fine as long as in between I didn't look moronic. Fast forward 4 hours and $500 (yes that much) My hair was patch neon orange and blondish.
It looked so terrible I didn't know what to do. I called the next day to say I just wasn't happy with it and the god awful manager had been waiting for my call. They knew they had done a bad job and were literally waiting for my complaint. However, instead of treating me kindly for all the time and money I spent for clown hair she was ridiculously rude to me and said I could come in at full cost to get it fixed.
What was I supposed to do? I went back in to get it fixed but the same guy turned it into the most god awful dishwater dirty mousey blond. I told him it was mousey and he started getting super rude telling me I was wrong. I sat in his chair crying for a couple minutes then paid my extra money and left. Had to get it fixed somewhere else. This place is awful. Overpriced, no talent, no class.
I also took issue with them offering me wine when they clearly do not have a liquor license. They didn't check my id and when I asked what if I'd been a minor they said, "oh we wouldn't have cared". SKETCH!

I only went in for the ionic foot detox. I wanted to do a cleansing and Preston was the only place the popped up in the google engine foe this service in my area However, I was not impressed at all. There was no designed area for the procedure in this "upscale" salon spa. I thought it was very distasteful to have me sit in some random corner surrounded by stylists and clients being serviced at the same time.
The receptionist filled my foot bowl w/water, set the timer, handed me some papers to read and was off to something else until the timer bell "dinged". He unhooked me & sent me on my way with a suggestion of drinking plenty water. Which I believed should have been provided w/this service. It lasted 30 min and I felt no different from the time I walked in. I saw zero results so I was extremely disappointed that I'd paid $50 for a service I was very excited to try.

Is it possible to give less than one star? I was a big fan of Preston's for many years until I went there one day for an all over color. The shampoo girl did not wash out all of the dye and I went home not realizing this. The next day I woke up and had CHUNKS OF HAIR missing around my head. It litterally had eaten away my hair. I had to get all of my hair cut paid for extensions- which were not fuzed correctly. Paid $1000 + for these extensions which lasted about 3 months-rather than the 6 I was told they would.
The extensions, because of placement ended up knotting the back under part of my hair into dreads. My hair is still growing out and has not made it to the length that was "eaten away by the color/bleach".

My entire family (dad included) have been going here for years. My regular stylist is Perry, and I would give him my first born sometimes to get an appointment, but in times of need I have gone to others and NEVER been disappointed in the way my hair came out. (And being the frizzy haired kid that I am, trust me, this is a feat). The parking situation is less than awesome, but being in downtown Clayton and having a free lot is amazing, regardless of how much maneuvering you have to do to get in and out of it. It's not cheap, but it's your hair, and you might as well spoil yourself once in a while. But the high light of Preston Salon, having Tess do your shampooing. Trust me, you'll realize the money you just dropped was worth every penny.
