They may give good haircuts (at times) but the customer service sucks and honestly doesn't make me want to come back or recommend the salon. this is the second time my grandmother had booked a consultation and the time got moved without her permission. when she called to ask why she overheard the receptionist Bree say to not change it. You'd think your workers would care about the place they work? guess not! my grandmother cannot drive at night which is specially why she needed an early appointment. which she did make but somehow no one wanted to accommodate her. genuinely repulsed and upset by this

Another master cut by Shai! I can never go back to my old hair or stylist! Shai and hai assistant (sorry but forgot her name) were friendly and professional. Took the time to walk me step by step through the process. They do not only cut and style your hair, but will teach you how to maintain it! I feel like I've learned a whole new "hair" language! So happy I found this salon! Definitely recommend to anyone who wants to invest in themselves and be the best curly headed person they could be!

I am Mexican mom with a mixed child (Mexican/Jamaican). When I got pregnant, I realized the magnitude of importance on my soon to be daughter's hair. I was already getting YouTube educated. I learned about natural hair cure, learned to braid, learned to twist, and add on hair! But, there is only so much I can learn from my own experience. My goal: To give her hair the gift of patience (more than my own), educated hands, and trained eye to give her hair the best "spa day" ever. Jazmin was such a pleasure!
Very kind, answered all of my questions, and let feel her hair a few times at the bowl. I have to unlearn some things to get her hair the way we left. I am grateful for Jazmin's consideration for my 8yr old. Most importantly her positive influence on my child. This was fantastic!

I decided to try out this salon for a curl by curl cut in November of 2021. I had finally started embracing my natural waves during quarantine, after about 20 years of consistently ironing my hair straight and getting annual Brazilian blowouts. As a child I had never had a good cut and couldn't ever figure out how to wear my natural hair. The reviews were great so I decided to see a regular (middle tier) stylist.
I have very thick, long, wavy Middle Eastern hair (2c). The stylist gave me a cut that would work better on a tighter coil. She gave me a layer that does not properly blend in, it just sits on top of the bottom layer. It is now April, I have tried a variety of products and tools at different price points (she made it a point to mention that I would need high end products to look good)and I can honestly say my waves looked better before this cut.
The stylist didn't do much in terms of teaching me the best techniques on how to manage my curls at home. She answered direct questions when prompted but did little to guide me, even though I had made it clear that I hadn't worn my natural hair out in public since I was a child. Overall the experience was disappointing. The haircut was mediocre, the stylist wasn't particularly friendly or helpful. I would not recommend this business to anyone with thick waves, especially considering the price point.

I came in for a hair cut in November last year. If I could I would ask for my money back. Know that I basically got the lazy money making end of the deal. I was very specific on asking that we cut enough hair that i stop loosing hair from the tangled mess. Absolutely did not receive that. They didn't want to originally honor me coming in for a redo because the girl I had stopped working there the day after.
And that was some how my problem not theirs. Finally they had me come in. Thought I was getting my hair cut but it was a consultation with the owner. Felt so awkward because when I came it it was not welcoming. i cant believe I paid $335 to receive no results of what I asked. Didn't realize how bad it was until I went somewhere else a few weeks ago. Asked for the same thing and my hair has no more issue.

I got my haircut with Shai a bit over a year ago now. I'm leaving this review now because I found a new stylist and they made me feel super comfortable. I had the opposite experience with Shai. I went because he was "The Curl Doctor." Celebrity stylist and all that. I had never had a curly cut since I had transitioned from straight 4 years prior.
I was really scared to cut my hair. I didn't know anything. I needed real help. First, you have to prep your hair before going. You have to wash, dry, detangle, and use no product, which is super inconvenient if you have a life and a job. My new stylist did not require this step and my haircut was much better. They made me feel super comfortable and shared knowledge.
And they and their assistants have curly hair. When I went to Shai, I was scared. I'm very shy. He didn't make me feel comfortable at all and was really short with me. I barely got a haircut. He barely looked at me. I even tried to make conversation and I'm really shy. It was so awkward. His assistant, who had straight hair, answered all my questions.
She basically did every single thing after the cut. He didn't really touch my hair much. The cost was $360 for him to barely look at me, give me no reassurance. He barely cut my hair because he didn't really talk to me and make me feel comfortable to ask for more. He seemed like he was in a bad mood and passed me off to assistants as soon as he could.
When I was leaving, a little girl arrived for a cut. Suddenly Shai was smiling and talkative. He was taking Instagram photo ops. I'm sure he cuts hair well when the person will give him engagement and business. I guess I wasn't good enough press. Never ever again. I see they respond to review. Please don't bother responding. I'm not into the fake PR and I'm not coming back.

Natarsha made this experience a pleasant one! I was so pleased with how she really took her time and took great care of my hair. I felt so glad to have her as my stylist! She gave me exactly what I wanted! Some volume but maintained my length. She went above and beyond even squatting in heels to dry my dripping wet hair as I had my head bent over to drain the excess water (She has a method to everything) now I have to remember how to do it myself!
She was cutting my hair up until I walked out of the salon as she saw a few touch ups she could make. I will definitely be back in 6 months for another cut with her! Thanks again Natarsha! Best experience ever getting my first curly haircut!

I got my hair cut at Capella almost 2 months ago. I have hesitated writing a review because I don't want to dwell on how unhappy I am with the results. I spent a lot of time researching this salon and it came with a good recommendation from a curly haired friend so I took the leap for this very expensive haircut. Like most curly haired women, I've had bad haircuts in the past so I explicitly told my stylist "PLEASE KEEP THE LENGTH AND DON'T MAKE ME LOOK LIKE A TRIANGLE" - well, of course she took off about 6 inches and I have a total triangle head.
Two months later and I have worn my hair tied back in a bun every single day because it's too embarrassing to wear down. I cry almost every time I shower when I have to face the reality of this horrible shape. It's just such a huge poufy triangular mess with blunt cut layers that pop out horizontally. I'm tearing up writing this because I'm just so sad that all those years of growth were chopped off so carelessly. (BTW the "experience" takes 3 hours but the cut took 20 minutes.
The rest of the time was me sitting under a diffuser with 2 lbs of product in my hair). I can tell It will take me at least a year before I'll feel comfortable wearing my hair down in any way. Just. still so horribly sad and disappointed and finally felt the need to share this experience with anyone who might be having doubts.

If you have curly hair, you know how hard it is to find someone who knows how to treat it. NATARSHA did the best work on my hair that I've Ever had! I have thin, curly/wavy hair, that was very tangled do to a medical bed rest, & she was so patient w/ it, provided such care, attention, & Magic. Not only was the detangling amazing, but then her treatment to my hair, advice on styling, & overall general likability was such a bonus. Hair is her art, & her gift.

So I've been wanting to come to this salon for well over five years now. But I knew I didn't want to spend the money unless I knew I would be willing to commit to not straightening my hair. After a year of quarantine, I decided to take the plunge. I didn't have a stylist in mind, so I booked with one with the next opening. They require a $75 dollar deposit upon booking, but it goes towards your final payment.
Just know before your appointment you need to wash, condition and have your hair fully dry before arriving. They have a ton of parking, at least when I arrived at 10am for my appointment. My stylist was marlee and she was AMAZING! she had a short conversation before she started about what I was looking for. I told her what products I used and I KNEW they weren't the best lol.
I love how she walked through the whole process with me: from the dry cut, to the wash and condition parts. I was amazed but NOT shocked at how amazing my hair looked and most importantly FELT. She didn't pressure me to buy hair products but I knew in order to really go in with my natural journey I wanted to make sure I had the beet products. I was able to purchase the smaller bottles and even gave me a card and number I could contact her if I had any questions. I will definitely be back!

My dry, heat-damaged, bleached hair was in desperate need of love. Then I got a referral from a good friend who recommended that I see Natarsha. That was the turning point! She not only takes time to study your hair, get familiar with your hair goals and specific hair needs, but she educates you in how to care for your curly locks with a realistic timeline of when you can see your hair reach its fullest potential. Plus the salon is taking incredible precautions to keep patrons safe - something I truly appreciate!

Recently I got my haircut with Tasha for the first time in over 18 months. My curls were pandemic crazy. I secured an appointment and was excited to finally have a hair reset. I arrived on time to find that 5 minutes before I arrived, a pipe had burst on the street and water was shut off for the entire block. After my initial disappointment at not being able to get my hair washed, I opted to still have Tasha cut it. Honestly, I'm floored by the results.
It might be the best cut I ever got. And I can go back to get it washed anytime. I have a renewed confidence because of Tasha. I'm including before pic and a pic of after the cut after washing my hair at home. Really incredible!

This place has gone downhill in recent years. We had a bad experience with Alex. She seemed very new and had poor customer service. Almost as if we were inconveniencing her. Edit: Adding this edit as I appreciate that the salon owners responded when I left a review, but not to my phone call or email. They are only concerned with optics. There were multiple witnesses to this event, including the receptionist who would attest to the fact that the situation was handled unprofessionally and borderline dangerously by their stylist. If you are reading this, I urge you to make your own decision and even try the salon out. You will find for yourself what outstanding customer service looks like here.

I have followed Shai Amiel, AKA, The Curl Doctor for at least two -three years. I read and re-read post. I screen shot image after image for closer inspection. I yelped and I googled him. Is this man for real? Are people really satisfied? I basically stalked this man, because I didn't want another faux, replicated Deva-like Cut by a well meaning but misinformed stylist.
I had to make sure that he was legit. Yes, I have seen three different people who claimed to be trained and well-versed in dry cuts for curly girls. They talked a good game and I let my guard down to honestly save a buck. While the experiences weren't terrible (no harm done) they were just far from what I had come to learn about this style of cutting.
One very nice lady offered the comb to me m, so that I could show her how I comb and style my hair, "what?" Another person raved about his training and then took clumps of hair and started cutting, "huh?". The last person I went too seemed scared of my texture hair, stating that it was the curliest hair she'd ever seen, and at the end, she picked out all my pretty spiral curls and I left with a big dry fro, "hmph." Fast forward to February 2019, I finally said, "Enough is Enough".
I scheduled my appointment and saved my pennies for a date with the Doctor! My curly friends let me tell you, it was worth every cent! The salon was decadent! Although I am an administrator I was made to feel like a celebrity. The assistant Tasha showed me around and offered me a beverage. I was introduced to Shai, who immediately made me feel comfortable and familiar, as if we'd known each other for years!
He listened carefully and gave advice while he carcasses and assessed my curls. His cut was exactly what I had expected, Curl-by-Curl. I knew I was in great hands! He also explained about the condition of my hair and alerted me that I had been using the wrong product for my very full, but fine curls. I needed a much lighter product to allow my hair to show its definition while also showcasing body and fullness.
After the cut Tasha took over my curls at the wash bowl. She trained me on how to strangle, and on how much product to use. After a short deep conditioning stint under the dryer, she proceeded to style my hair at the bowl. Apparently all styling products need to be applied I'm drenched hair. Something I had not been doing in my own. Lastly we defused my hair with several directives flip my curls this back, forward to the left and to the right.
The end result was shiny, defined spirals that I was in love with! I have finally found my stylist! Will I be returning? 100 Percent Yes! Thank you Shai, thank you Tasha and thanks to all the staff that make up the family at Capella Salon! I am a happy customer. Side note: if you purchase products be aware that they only provide store credit if you accidentally buy the wrong item. Be sure before you swipe your card!

This is my first time getting my hair done at Capella Salon. Honestly it's been 4 years since I've stepped foot in any salon. I have really curly hair, and it's always been difficult to find the right salon with stylists who are trained in dealing with curly hair. I did a little research on salons near me and this one popped up first.
I checked the reviews and pictures and saw curly hair after curly hair so immediately I gave them a call. I booked my appointment for the following day with Alex and WOW! I have never walked out of a salon with so much knowledge on how to properly care for my hair. Alex was extremely knowledgeable. As someone who is still figuring out how to care for my hair, Alex brought me so much clarity.
My end result is breathtaking. I almost cried tears of absolute joy because I've never had such a wonderful experience at a salon. Never have I walked out feeling so in love with my hair! My hair looks silky, hydrated, my scalp isn't irritated or dry anymore, each curl is defined and I have healthy bouncy volume! Alex thank you so much! I will be back for sure. Thank youuuu

This review is for Shai, Sophia, and Sonia. My daughter and I went to the salon today and I was pleasantly surprised. My daughter is 6 and has enough energy to power LA. Sophia was patient and kind to her the entire time. She never tired of her questions and watched all her videos. She took the time to cut her hair curl by curl and finger detangle.
My daughter is EXTREMELY tender headed to the point were it is almost unbearable for me to do it. She was extremely personable and kind taking the time to educate me about my daughters hair and what routine would work best for her. She even listened to my daughter's wants for her hairstyles. My haircut was with Shai. He actually took the time to listen to my concerns and answered all of my questions, no matter how random.
He was patient and a great conversationalist. He took his time sectioning out each curl, which was a feat within its self because my hair was ridiculously frizzy, and cut each one individually. He gave me advice on what to do to help with moisture and split end prevention. Sonia washed and styled my hair. She took her time and set the water temperature perfectly(which is a huge deal to me, I hate cold).
She was charismatic and funny as well. She made me laugh as she finger detangled my hair. She was thorough and I could barely feel it. Sonia made sure to tell me exactly what she was doing, which product to use, and how to implement it at home. Shai came back over once I was done washing to do a final cut. Then I sat under the dryer until my hair was finished.
Then Shai came to give me more advice and helped me check out. If you want stylists who are knowledgeable, friendly, and amazing at what they do then I definitely recommend Capella.

Shai and his assistants Sonja and Alex have provided me with an unforgettable salon experience. My hair is challenging and I haven't had it cut in over 2 years. It was dry, tangled and made wash days a pain. It was also turning grey and grey hair isn't cooperative. Shai asked me what I wanted and I showed him pictures. When I left my hair was hydrated, much easier to manage and CUTE!
His assistants are knowledgeable, patient and aren't afraid of a challenging head of hair. And they're HAPPY! You can tell they really like their job. I drove to his shop from Phoenix but it was well worth it. Thank you Shai!

I've only been for my consultation so far, but the staff is very friendly, accommodating, and takes covid protocols seriously. It was a huge relief to have someone lovingly touch and understand my hair after dealing with other salons that claimed to have experience with curly hair. The process and everything was clearly explained to me during the consultation and I look forward to my appointment!

I will start by saying that I was very scared to go to a salon, because so many hair stylists pretty much ruined my hair with bad techniques and cheap materials. I was assigned to Tasha, and I LOVED her, she was sooooo patient, and she kept explaining to me every step of the process. After 3 hours I was more than amazed of the result! The cut and the color LOOKD BEAUTIFUL! My hair was never so pretty and healthy. I will FOR SURE go back to Tasha. Great experience and great work! Thank you Tasha! You are the best:

This is my response to Shai's comment: I am that person that doesn't leave reviews because I am generally satisfied with a product or service and the other stellar reviews speak for themselves. That is the reason why I have only written two reviews on Yelp. But there are times such as this when I need to speak up. When I read your comment I felt guilty and then disappointed all over again.
I agree that you are human and everyone makes mistakes but I am the recipient of your mistake. I also agree that the best course of action would have been to call the salon for a complimentary retouch. Have you ever felt so disappointed that you feel deflated as if all the fight has left you and all you want to do is forget and move on? That was me.
That is the reason why I did not call because I don't want to rearrange my schedule and drive an hour to the salon again. In order for me to forget, forgive, and move on was to write a review of my experience. I needed closure. Now you've just pissed me off. Based on your comment I can tell you are trying to cover your ass. For example, I followed the receptionist instructions and washed my hair and then detangled and brushed out my hair in the shower. Afterwards I let my hair air dry and did not apply any product to my hair.
This was done the day of my appointment. Therefore, my hair was detangled and I was pleased when you complimented my hair saying, "I can tell you take good care of your hair." You did not warn or advise me about potentially having to come back for a retouch. If you have to give a warning to someone and if they have to come back for a retouch within a few days then that implies I am not the first person who has been dissatisfied with your work. Furthermore, I waited three months for an appointment and when I had a small hiccup with my schedule and tried to reschedule I was told that your next available appointment was in March.
This was back in early November. The salon might not be at full capacity but I can tell you do not lack for clientele. I bet you alone bring in enough revenue to keep your business afloat from the amount of clients you have booked. I am writing an honest review of my experience and not attacking your business. What came under attack is your ego. Your attempt to redirect blame and make me feel guilty for the bad haircut that I received is obvious.

Y'all! Look at these curls! (Before on left, afters on right) Marissa at took such wonderful care of my hair yesterday. For my natural hair ladies out there yall know how hard it to to find a stylist (let alone a salon) that honors, values and uplifts natural hair. Particularly if you are blessed with 4c kinky as kinky gets texture. Without putting a comb or any heat to my head (and without pulling my scalp out!), Marissa cut, washed and expressed my curls in a way that I have never experienced in all 33 years of my blessed life.
She also took the time to explain to me how to care for and style my hair and walked me through her entire treatement on my hair. Past stylists have been told to perm my hair, texurize my hair, straighten my hair. All my life I have been told my hair was too much by people who didn't understand it. They handled my head and hair roughly, causing me pain and frustration, leading to belive my hair was a curse. @marissadjackson changed that, she told me my hair was magic, that curly hair is the only hair that defies gravity and my texture defies it most of all I am so grateful. I would highly recommend. I will absolutely be back

I just decided to go heatless because I've flat ironed my hair since I was 13 and now I'm in my 30's. I want to know what my actual curl pattern is! LoL Shai is so charming and great at what he does! He cut my hair dry and took his time to make sure he got every curl. Then Alex took sooo much time (in a good way) making sure my hair was clarified (HIGHLY suggest the Olaplex treatment!), washed and conditioned/deep conditioned, detangled by hand, then styled piece by piece, and finally dried and fluffed out. Sonya helped at the end and she was just as nice and funny as Alex. PLUS they suggested I take notes and videos on the whole process since it would be my first time trying to do it all myself afterwards. It was everything and more that I hoped it would be! Make your appointment NOW! LoL, they fill up super quickly and for good reason. They're the best!

Capella Salon is a must visit for every curly headed human. Shai, the curly hair doctor has revolutionized curly hair care in Southern California. And many people flock from afar to sit in his chair or to have their hair done by the myriad of other talented people that take care of each curl on every single head they see. Janaye is my personal choice for hair care expert.
She is a fellow curly girl and wears her hair in a glorious display all that curls can do. She is skilled with a pair of shears and hair friendly products that result in Instagram worthy hair. Because of getting my haircut here I am more comfortable with wearing my hair in its natural state and therefore I'm no longer controlled by a flat iron or even a blow dryer. I hope that everyone will just wear a mask on this planet and make covid-19 disappear so we can all return to having top-notch curly hair care at Capella Salon.

Went to see The Curl Doctor to finally get the big chop. I had 47 textures in my hair trying to hold on to length, and none of it worked unless I pressed my hair. So I kept pressing it, pressing my curl pattern out completely. Then I went to protective styles in efforts to grow my hair back down my back and it wouldn't get past a certain length. Also, I had developed a thin patch at my temple due to recent tragedy and stress.
My hair stopped growing. The roots we're healthy but the ends were trash. The Curl Doctor was friendly and made me feel comfortable. They gave me a whole dissertation on curls and hair care. Much of the visit was about products which were ridiculously marked up (thus the docking of a half star), but I felt a world of possibilities letting go of the dead length.
I struggled for weeks after until I figured out how to style my hair and it has been 6 months since my visit and I am proud to say my thin patch has completely regenerated, my hair has grown nearly 6 or 7 inches, my natural curls are phenomenal, and even the area of the back of my crown that stopped growing over 10 years ago has completely regenerated.
I'll add that I have almost no split ends, as well. I've managed to avoid direct heat (except for a blowdryer to set my shower-curled hair, and I feel better about my hair, overall. Could anyone have chopped off my hair? Probably. But Shia creates an experience and understands what you will grow into, and I'm looking forward to visiting again, when needed. It's an expensive visit, but I haven't had to go to a salon in 6 months so it probably balances out.

This was my first time to the salon. I decided to go based on pics that I adored on Shai's instagam. I loved the experience, and Shai's asistant was darling and very thorough on their process. but i honestly hate my hair. 1. The shape is similar to a mushroom. I've tried pinning the sides, adding a part, etc, but i can't get it to work 2. Once the styling was complete, my hair appeared dull and dry 3.
The gel that was used made my hair extremely crunchy (not sure if this is to be expected or not) Bottom line, my hair has a mushroom shape, is pretty uneven, and I really don't know what to to with it. I would advise considering your texture and curl pattern before patronizing this salon. I also noticed how the salon's owner describes people as being "tacky" on some negative reviews that were left. and pretty surprised with that response because it doesn't seem to fit the character of the salon as everyone I encountered seems very professional and had amazing customer service.

After reviewing the salons Instagram, yelp, and Google Page, I was really excited to try it out. Yesterday, I went in and asked for a very specific color or a base. The colorist did not highlight my hair to the roots. The base came out much later and ginger. The way they dried and styled my hair completely killed all of my curls. I started crying and left the salon very upset.
I went back, and asked for a discount, or some type of refund for what had happened to my hair. The owners only response was that I need to come back to the salon and fix it. But how my supposed to trust the salon again once they colored my hair orange? There was no apology. There was no it knowledge meant of their mistake. Better yet they charge you $75 as a deposit, and another $290 for the color and base.
Then you have to remind them that you actually already paid $75. I would never return here, I wouldn't recommend anyone to. Perhaps there are some people at the salon who have different experiences. But if something happens to your hair and it gets completely ruined don't expect any of knowledge meant or your money back.

LOVE THIS PLACE! I have lived in Studio City for years but have never gotten my hair cut down here (I always waited until I took trips back home to visit my normal hair stylist). Finally one day I decided to take a chance and just go for it. I found this place on yelp, and I'm so glad I did! I walked in and immediately felt welcomed and taken care of.
My hair stylist was Sasha. She was so nice and accommodating - I trusted her instantly. She cut my hair exactly as I wanted. Truthfully I've never felt happier with a haircut! I highly recommend Capella Salon!

My sister and I traveled to Capella from Cleveland for a Deva cut and they were so accommodating for us! It was a wonderful experience we definitely received four star service! We had the Deva cut done and we're happy with the results but left and wanted it tweaked a little bit so came back and the salon owner Shai stayed after hours touched up our hair to make sure we were happy with the results. I'll definitely be back again! I had not had my curly hair cut in 5 years and they took great care of it & were very gentle.
