It's been awhile since I had my appointment at shine salon, about 6 months, and my experience still infuriates me, so I am deciding to share it now. I booked my appointment for just a cut which I was told was $60, which is fine with me. My hairs length was about half way down my back and I simply wanted it cut short to my collar bones, blunt cut, no layers or anything.
As simple as it gets right? My assigned stylist was Jessica. The first thing I noticed when I got to her "station" was that it was not really a station like the others. It was literally just a long mirror laying against the wall In the very corner with a small table to hold her supplies. I told Jessica what I wanted and she took me to shampoo my hair which went fine.
Then she starts cutting my hair which is where it all goes wrong. She starts cutting from the back, and when she's done she asks how I like it. I asked her to cut it shorter and I told her that looking from the front, the right side looked longer than the left side. So she goes back and cuts it shorter, the length was fine this time but again I could see from the front looking in the mirror that the right side was a solid 1.5 inch longer than the left.
She tells me that it is actually even because she measured it when she was cutting from the back. Mind you she did not one single time look at my hair from the front to measure the length of the 2 front pieces to make sure they were the same length. She tried to fix it again and I told her once again that I could see that the right was still about 1inch longer than the left, but she just kept insisting that it was even.
I was frustrated so I just went with it and paid and left. I got home in tears and my husband asked what was wrong, then he immediately noticed how uneven my haircut was and was shocked that I paid $60 for that mess. Now I could see being uneven by centimetres would be fine, but for the right side to be a literal whole inch longer that the left? This was the most simple haircut and Jessica did not deliver. Will not go back.

Absolutely will drive back to Charlotte to visit Rachel. We had an amazing time getting to know each other and learning about my hair and how to style this transitional cut. I'm super excited that I found a salon that really takes the time to care and educate their customers. I will definitely be coming back and bringing my daughter next time. this cut is amazing and I'm officially obsessed.

When I moved to charlotte, I found Sarah W on instagram after obsessively looking for someone to take care of my blonde hair and extensions! Sarah's credentials brought me to shine salon, but her outgoing and super positive personality made me a permanent client! Sarah went above and beyond in making sure I achieved the color I wanted and my extensions are tied so well - after 8 weeks they're still in great shape! I recommend anyone interested in extensions and achieving your color goals to book with Sarah asap!

I first started working with Sarah when she was in cosmetology school and was excited to learn she was staying local after graduating. Sarah works "color magic" and my root line is always flawless after my highlights. I have an immunocompromised family member and Sarah is always willing to wear a mask. I greatly appreciate her thoughtfulness. The staff at Shine Salon are also a pleasure to interact with!

From the moment i walked into Shine Salon, I was pampered and treated with such professionalism. The hair services (highlights and cut/style) I received from Sarah W were absolutely incredible. I will be back again and again - even with a 1 hour drive from my home! Services: Haircut, Hairstyling, Highlights

Sometimes you can get a great cut but my last one was possibly the worst I've ever had. I am a white man with very straight hair so why did I get assigned a black woman, that doesn't know the first thing about having natural straight hair to cut it? I was tempted to walk our but I didn't want to hurt her feelings or be accused of being a racist. I could have got the same cut any any number of black salons for a fraction of the cost. It's a shame because this is a nice salon in my neighborhood but after that experience I don't feel appreciated and won't be back. One less white man, hurray, right?

Jen does my hair extensions and she has literally SAVED my life. I was extremely ill for a year and a half and 75% of my beautiful, naturally curly, auburn hair fell out, as my body had taken a huge hit. I went to get hand tied extensions in my hometown by a girl who had never done them before, and it caused a lot of breakage and further damaged my hair.
The second person I saw had a lot of experience with hair extensions but did them quickly and wasn't really invested in my journey with hair regrowth. I had moved up to Charlotte in June and set out to find someone to do my extensions here in town. It took me about two months but I finally got into Shine Salon to do a consultation with Jen. She was very thorough with her explanation on what we needed to do to get my hair looking right again with some good extensions with growth/restoration being the priority.
She even found an amazing brand that sells wavy/curly hair which blends so well with my natural hair! Jen really cares about making each and every one of her clients and wants us to have the best experience both in the salon and out in our everyday lives. She truly wants the best for us and to make us feel beautiful. I will continue going to see her to get my extensions refreshed and I look forward to my appointments each time. Thank you SO much, you all are the best!

What a LOVELY experience. I booked an appt for a normal haircut. I guess on the phone I mentioned I was new to Charlotte, and sure enough, after my haircut they gave me the sweetest gift basket with all these free samples and a gift card to come back! Everyone was so friendly, and the gesture was above and beyond.

Pretty great place:) I was a reg for a while when Houston worked there, and have had a few other stylist cut my hair, as well. Houston did my color (balayage and reg color- amazing!), so I ended up switching salons when he left. However, while I switched (to go to a different colorist), I have recommended this salon to several friends and colleagues- all of which have not been disappointed;) great colorists and stylists (yes, there's a difference!). they hire quality! Also, the place is light, bright, and clean! Love the product selection too:)

I can't say anything better about Mikala and the work she did on my hair. After a terrible experience at another salon with hand tied extensions I saw Mikala in hopes she could fix me up. Not only did she do AMAZING work (see pics) she got me in right away after hours and stayed until 10pm on a holiday weekend to make sure I was happy. Mikala is and should be your go-to hand tied extension stylist in the Charlotte area. I recommend getting on her books ASAP! The pictures speak for themselves on the quality work she did on my hair.

Terrible business owners, Beth and Steve Pence have done nothing but run this salon into the ground while trying to make it a money stealing corporation. If you want to shop local and support small, don't go to Shine Salon because the owners dont give back to their local community, they only take. I was hoping to see them much more active since their move toward my neighborhood almost two years ago but they only cramp up parking and charge a fortune for decent hair.
I can't get behind what they are about. What are they even about anyway? The place looks like a medical office and charging $400 for something that has the personality and character of a dead flower.

I have finally found my forever salon, as long as i'm in Charlotte. First of all Sarah G does amazing hair! I have literally never liked my hair more, and every time she does it I feel so beautiful and like a new person. She has gotten me to try new styles and add some funky to my style. Now for the salon, the salon itself is beautiful inside. 2 levels of fabulousness.
I always see Sarah G but every person I have encountered is super friendly and knows the products they sell. As for refreshments, they have coffee, soda, water, always some kind of snack like cookies, beer and wine for the 21 and up club. I really enjoy my experience everytime I get my hair done. People are friendly and they seem like a big family. Love love love Shine Salon!

Shine Salon is my go to hair salon in Plaza. The establishment is beautiful and I love that they offer you wine before your appointment. They have a variety of hairdressers from $45 and up. The reason for the 4 stars is I've had some pretty average hairdressers who charge almost $90 for a simple hair cut while the best hair dressers I've had had (shout out to Sarah) cost half that amount. I'll continue going here as long as they have quality, reasonable hairdressers.
I would encourage people to call ahead and see which hairdressers are within your price range (as it doesn't say in their site); otherwise, you be forking over a car loan payment.

I was referred to this salon and the stylist, Hustin, through a friend. I moved to Charlotte recently and I needed a new stylist STAT. I showed for my appointment with a photo of Drew Barrymore as inspiration for a russet red/light auburn color and corresponding cut. The appointment ended at night and when I asked for a picture from the back, Hustin told me that the lighting was bad, and the salon had already closed so we needed to get going anyway.
Odd response and strange to not even get a pic after all that processing, but I did not think much of it at the time. In the dark, it looked different than expected but the styling made it acceptable enough for me to pay $280 up front with a $40 tip. It wasn't until the sun rose the next day that I truly saw the atrocity on my head. I woke up with violet purple roots, orange dip dyed ends and layers so chunky that people in my morning class asked, "WTF happened to your hair?" I texted Hustin pictures, dismayed, but still positive.
I even apologized for bothering him. Surely, this was just a huge mistake. He responded saying that the orange color was his "vision" and that all balayage looks like that if it's not curled (note: balayage is a technique, not a style). He even said "Yeah I don't like that" in reference to one of the pics I sent. Not a single apology was offered to me from him.
I went to Shine Salon directly the next day. The front desk/ other stylists there were extremely apologetic, warm and understanding. Chuck offered a free color correction treatment and Olaplex in order to save my hair. The simply bad work was obvious and I did receive a refund for the original service. Chuck was very sweet about everything and I would have trusted her to fix it if I wasn't so scarred from the experience.
I ended up having to drive 6 hours round trip to my old stylist to fix my hair. This resulted in me needing to chop 5 inches off to even my layers and I will still need another appointment to get the color exactly where I want it again. All in all, Shine Salon is extremely professional, and I believe that there must be some quality talent there. But Hustin?! We have a problem.

I cannot say enough good things about my experience at Shine. I found it through Google by searching "Charlotte balayage" and I'm so glad I did! Hustin was my stylist and did an absolutely incredible job. I showed him pictures of what I wanted, and he went above and beyond my expectations. My hair color is probably the prettiest it has ever been, and I'm literally getting compliments from people everywhere I go. I've bounced around Charlotte salons trying to find a fit for me, and I've definitely found it. No one but Hustin will ever touch my hair again! By the way, the rest of the staff were very friendly and professional. 5 stars, 2 thumbs up, HIGHLY recommend.

Super disappointed in my service I received from Sandy on Saturday. I came in as a first time client, checked in a few minutes early. 15 minutes after my appointment I went and asked how long it would be. The woman assured me that Sandy was finishing up. I had a gut feeling I should just leave, I mean a first time client and you are late and give me no update.
She finally comes out in a whirlwind 20 mins after my scheduled appointment. She basically told me she forgot about my appointment. She takes me back to her chair and starts my consult, she sounded knowledgeable so I tried to be as ease and more comfortable. I mean who isn't a bit nervous the first time a new person cuts your hair. I showed Sandy a photo (which I will add to my post) it was a highly textured cut for long hair.
I spent a lot of time growing my hair out but wanted to shape it up and give it a trim to air on the healthy side for my long locks. Sandy took me over for a shampoo, she washed my hair. Many times getting shampoo in my face. She said she wanted to put a conditioner in my hair and leave it to set for 5 mins. Well I sat there with my eyes closed, finally got restless and opened my eye and see my hairstylist with another client. WHAT THE CRAP!
I felt very unimportant at this point but. what do I do with wet hair. I felt committed but I was very upset. She finally came back, much longer than 5 minutes had passed. She rinsed my hair, gave me a two second scalp massage and sent me to the chair. She starts to cut and I see her out the scissors up by my nose. I said "whoa, you are scaring me! that's super short" to which she replied "oh it's fine, these are inside layers" then SNIP!
I was so tense and freaking out. She revealing to me at the end and I was about to cry but I couldn't tell her. I mean what is the point, you can't put the hair back on! I now basically have bangs, hair up to my nose! My cut looks like a mullet, very short on top and super long underneath. It's awful and I'm basically having to pin it bad everyday until it grows out.
Not only that, she barely put any effort into styling it. I feel like that was because she was running behind and had another client. AWFUL EXPERIENCE! Below is the cut I requested. I'm too embarrassed to show what I got!

Shine was the first salon I checked out since moving from Chicago, and I can safely say it will be the only salon as well! I was told their studio is brand new and you can definitely tell; it is gorgeous! From the moment I was greeted, everyone there was welcoming and friendly. My stylist, Hustin, was A M A Z E! He took my blonde balayage from meh to gorgeous!
I would even let him make me full blonde, that's how much I have fallen in love with my color. The prices are up there, but I firmly believe you get what you pay for, and my hair is worth it. Client for life!

I've been going to Shine for a few years now. James Vestal has been my stylist since day one and he's one of the best stylists I've ever had. His technique is on point and he really listens to what his clients want. He's also the first stylist who taught me how to style my hair after the cut rather than just leaving me to my own devices to make it look great in my everyday.
I have never gotten so many compliments. Shine recently moved locations and the space is spectacular. The hair washing stations allow you to put your feet up in a reclining chair and James' head rubs are what I keep coming back for! The lobby offers free coffee, soda, or wine. And the staff is so friendly! Stephanie at the front desk is the epitome of great customer service and proves her understanding that customer relationships are not just built between the stylist and client in the chair. While the prices are not exactly cheap, you definitely are getting what you pay for. It will be a sad day if/when I ever need to find a new place to go.

I needed balayage and a cut (a pretty significant one, at that) - a coworker had been here and liked it so I booked an appointment. I go in for my appointment only to be informed that the woman I booked with no longer works there. They claimed to have called everyone who had an appointment with her to inform them, but I never received a call (I even checked my missed calls to make sure).
So they book me with someone else. 10 days later I go back in. I tell the stylist what I want and after asking some questions, she gets to work. I didnt have her blow it out at the end because I had already been there for over three hours, so I didn't see what it looked like immediately. First of all, a price tag of over $200 for cut and color is insane.
I know coloring is expensive, but balayage is no longer some new thing that you can mark up so absurdly. So that itself was not thrilling. But it happens - it's definitely on me for not verifying the price first. Second, the tone of my hair was completely off. It was barely lighter than my natural color and was weirdly orangeish. In all 5 years of highlighting my hair, no one has ever messed up the color. It's a pretty simple request, particularly since I always have some blonde remaining so it's easy to see what color I need. Naturally, after such a to-do just getting the appointment, I was annoyed and upset.
The stylist brought me back in 10 days later and fixed it and it's better, but still not quite what I wanted. After all the hoopla with the appointments and the unsatisfactory execution, combined with the steep price tag, I will not be returning to Shine.

A Charlotte gem. Shine is an eclectic salon with a modern flair. The old craftsman house turned salon is charming, clean and welcoming. Smiling, helpful faces await you, immediately greet you and get you comfortable with your choice of beverage. Displaying local art for sale and carrying excellent products, Shine has a lot to offer their clientele.
When it was time for my appointment, my stylist was on time and I was immediately comfortable. Now, let's talk about my stylist, who I have now dubbed a hair demigod. Mark! Follow him on IG @markafterdark(no he did not solicit my review). I was sent to him on a referral from a dear friend. He. Is. Awesome. Hands down. I have never booked a follow up appointment with a stylist before.
I booked 2. Mark gave me a thorough consultation. We talked about the cut first, the color next and what was the best for my hair type. I have fine hair that is recovering from medication induced damage and loss. It must be babied. He took his time and you can tell he truly loves what he does in the amount of care and time he puts in listening to you.
And not in that "I'm a stylist so we have to talk" kind of way. Mark gave me the best cut and color I think I have ever had. My normally frizz prone and thin looking hair is smooth, shiny and full looking. Not to mention the orgasmic smelling products make me creepily sniff my own strands. He talked me through each process as he was performing so I could recreate and understand what is best for my hair at home. A close family member is a stylist and a good one at that! So my expectations were high. He passed!

Wow! Wow! Wow! Definitely not the least expensive place in town to get a men's haircut, but you get what you pay for and they are true professionals here at shine salon! James is amazing, I've never been to a place where they take so much time and focus on perfection. One of the biggest perks I found about this salon is that there is in a hidden agenda at all.
At other places I have always got a feeling that they are constantly trying to push products on you and our sales oriented. This wasn't the case there, everyone was focused on giving a great haircut and educating me on my hair rather than trying to just push products on me and get me in and out. I've learned a great deal from working with James and I plan to continue to return to shine salon. I finally found "my guy"
