2010 Wonderful service, great looking hair, and professionalism are standouts at Xplicit. Another great thing is that what she is using on your hair is not a secret- she walks you through each step and informs you of the products she is using. I have natural hair and not a ton of salons are competent in working with it.
FYI: Dryness: Contrary to popular belief, dry hair does not lack oil - most of us produce enough natural oil (sebum) to keep our hair healthy. What dry hair lacks is water (moisture). Open cuticles along the hair shaft allow moisture to escape into the air, resulting in dry hair with short-lived sheen.
Some licensed Cosmetologist are both. A hair care specialist is one who educates you on the health of hair and how to care for it. They will always do a hair consultation before touching your hair. The consultation should include tests to determine health of hair, inquiry of client hair care habits, recommendation for care, styling and use of professional products for home care use. They won't be cheap but client will be equipped with a lifetime of hair information to achieve and maintain healthy hair.

I wish I could give her more stars! When I tell y'all that I was over my hair. DeBorah brought it back to life! I was never taught how to properly care for my kinky hair, and she took the time to not only educate me, but even recommended some AMAZING products. From the scalp detox to the moisturizing conditioner, it was a great experience. I will be back for more styles and great conversation.
She was quick but efficient! I am in love with my flat twist! Finding a NATURAL hair stylist in San Diego is hard, so if you're looking for quality work, DeBorah is your go to! Thank you again!

Positive: Cleanliness, Professionalism, Punctuality, Quality, Value I went today and I haven't stopped looking at my hair. DeBorah is so knowledgeable about hair and so friendly. It reminded me of when my aunt would do my hair when i was little. She really cut and shaped my hair perfectly and recommended some great products that were affordable and me and my son can use. I had an amazing experience as a new client of DeBorah's. I am from out of state and was in desperate need of a hairstylist who understood my hair concerns and texture. I booked a silk press with her and not only loved the results, but loved the overall experience! She was very engaged in the process and was highly knowledgable about my hair texture and hair concerns.
She took her time detangling and deep conditioning my hair, and she made sure I was absolutely satisfied with my style. I feel so much better about the health of my hair after my appointment. I will book again!

Sitting in Deborah's chair was a dream come true for me. I decided to allow my hair to grow naturally without chemically treating it over a decade ago and have been following her on Facebook ever since, hoping one day she would work her magic on my hair. I finally got to meet MY celebrity hairstylist almost two weeks ago. Deborah is such a beautiful soul.
She actually sat and discussed my hair with me before doing anything to it. Was not rushed at all, even had a snack during our conversation! I could not believe that I was the only person booked for that moment and had her full attention. This is definitely opposite of what I remember the salon experience to be. I felt comfortable right away. She helped me understand what I was doing well to my hair and what I should not do.
She gave such good genuine and tailored advice. My trim and silk press results were amazing! I was completely prepared for short hair because I knew how damaged my ends were, but she took her time and cut only what needed to be cut to remove the bad ends and give it some shape. I have never felt so beautiful. Thank you Deborah!

I reached out to Xplicit Salon and De'borah replied within 24hrs of my message on Yelp. My whole experience was extremely professional. The respond time, clear instructions on availability and services was amazing. This is the first time I experienced a hair dresser that actually delivered top service. I did a big chop on my natural hair and by the time I left I was a new women thanks to De'borah. Im so happy I found this place. I would give six stars if I could.

I am a little delayed in my review - but I am here and glad for it. As someone with Type 4 hair, where the struggle to find stylists that can effectively care for our hair without damage or pain is quite real - it is essential that I spread the good news for others curious. Working with De'Borah was a wonderful experience. I went for a wash, deep condition, scalp treatment, and left with two-strand twists that I would eventually untwist.
With each step my hair and scalp felt great - and my hair was not ripped or pulled. Unfortunately, COVID kicked up around the time I was hoping to return for a second trip, but once the state of things improve, I will be back! Thank you De'Borah. - Channon

ZERO STARS! I WILL NEVER.EVER.EVER GO TO THIS SHOP A.F**KING.GAIN. I made an appt over a month ago for hair services. Per Debora's request, I made the appt using her online appt system. I even texted her immediately afterwards to make sure she saw my appt in her online system and she confirmed that she did. Guess what?! She was a complete no-show today. Mid morning on a Friday she doesn't up.
I call and her new vm says she she is out for the entire month of November due to her daughter's hip surgery. I received no text message, no phone call, no cancellation email.nothing! Absolutely nothing! It's Friday.who is going to have availability to squeeze me in? I'm leaving to go out out of town tomorrow and my hair isn't done.
I understand that she needs to be there for her family.completely understandable. But to not give me any heads up is downright ridiculous. I'm livid and that's even an understatement. I won't be back and I won't recommend her services to anyone else. Clearly her online system doesn't work. ***update**** 1) Don't ever call me sweetheart. That's just a way for you to try to minimize my complaint.
Your no-show was more than just an inconvenience. 2) Don't try to hit me with the "lack of compassion".blah blah. I'm a full grown adult. I understand life happens. It happens to ALL of us. It's how you handle those life issues that make all the difference. 3) I don't care if you've been in business for 25 years, 25 days, 25 minutes. 4) If you say you cancelled my appt 4 days in advance, per your text message to me, and you didn't hear anything from me confirming that I got a cancellation email then it is STILL your responsibility to maintain good customer relations by calling/texting to make sure I understood that the appt was cancelled. Yes, it's an extra step. Yes, more time would have been placed on reaching out and connecting.
But isn't that what good customer relations is all about? I would not have been nearly as pissed as I am still right at this moment if I had received any type of communication. We can blame it all day on technology and how it fails. How about we take our customer service skills way back to a time where business owners actually reached out to their clients/customers and spoke to them verbally.

I loved her she was one of the few hair stylist that did not yank my hair to shreds. If you have any concerns you are able to ask her because she is very knowledgeable about hair. She has a very bubbly upbeat personality and I appreciate the fact that she only has one person in her shop at a time so you are given her full attention not going through a rushed process. I highly recommend her.

DeBorah is a angel from heaven. I decided to cut my locs off after 16 years and I contacted DeBorah to consult her about going natural. My experience with DeBorah is more than satisfying. She guided me on how to care and style my loose natural hair. I love the positive energy DeBorah had and my hair responded well. If you are on a natural hair journey, I would recommend DeBorah because she is fabulous!

She informs her clients on the science behind what happens to hair during different processes which allows us to truly understand and grasp an idea of decisions we should make. I went to Xplicit Hair Studio expecting to cut my natural hair because I was frustrated with it. A few friends had recommended that I go see De'Borah and I am glad I went. She took the time to show me how to take care of my hair, with budget in mind, and even showed me different hairstyles I can try, which led me to not cutting my hair. I gained so much knowledge that day of how to take care of my hair and now appreciate what it can do and what it can become. I am blessed to have found her and will be a repeat customer.

It is so hard to find a good stylist for natural black hair in San Diego. I have been very pleased with De'Borah and she is the only stylist I will let cut my hair. I have 4c hair that is healthy and moisturized (thanks to De'Borah's advice and product recommendations) and could not be more pleased. I just went back to De'Borah for a trim after 2 years of not getting a hair cut! As always, she was kind and funny and helped me get these ends in line! I would recommend Xplicit salon to anyone wanting great care for their natural hair.

Ms. De'Borah is the only professional in SD I trust with my hair. She has done silk presses, comb twists, twist outs and up-dos for me for the past four years. She is very knowledgeable and professional and efficient with her scheduling and use of time. Her shop is relaxing and intimate and she is the absolute nicest. When I leave her shop, I look and feel great, and I'm a little bit more knowledgeable about how to better care for my natural hair.

After relocating to Southern California from Philadelphia, my search for a great black hair stylist has been no easy task. I visited Xplicit Hair in March and truly admired the owner's positive energy. Unfortunately, my hair experience was less than satisfactory. I've always enjoyed witnessing the "Before & After" effect while spending an afternoon at a lovely salon. Sadly, I watched many Xplicit clients leave with styles that did not look good.
It seemed as if the owner of Xplicit was unaccustomed to natural styles including flexirods. Her equipment and machinery did not function effectively, forcing me to sit under the dryer for a total of 4 hours. Still, my hair was not completely dry. To my disappointment, the final result cost $85 and lasted only one night. While this may be a suitable salon for some women, I will continue to look elsewhere for a stylist who understands my hair wants and needs as a client.

It was an absolute pleasure to be in De'Borah's chair. She knows what she's doing & what she's talking about! My appointment lasted 2 hrs and I received a wash, blow dry, silk press and trim. I'm extremely pleased with the level of service that was provided. I took a risk with trusting someone to straighten my hair without damaging it & she made sure not to use excessive heat. It was very comforting knowing that she is also a natural and takes pride in natural healthy hair.

I'm *trying* to transition from relaxed hair to natural hair without cutting all my hair off. I have no idea what I'm doing. Watching youtube and following people on instagram is not helping me. I was not going to write a review but felt compelled to in order to share my experience with others (particularly those with natural 4c hair) to save them the money and time I lost getting my hair done at this establishment. Just some background information- I have been natural for about five years now and those of us with natural hair in San Diego know that there are a limited number of stylist who do natural hair here in the area.
I was excited upon finding this hairdresser (Debora)and my initial appointment took place about six months or so ago. At this appointment, Debora made a lot of jabs and negative comments about the texture of my hair and it was clear to me that she had negative feelings about my 4c hair. I was pleased with the outcome of my hair on this date and due to the shortage of natural hairdressers in San Diego and against my better judgement, I decided to keep her number in hopes that my next experience would be better then this appointment. Unfortunately, this was not the case at all and it got even worse. Debora continued forth with her negative comments and snide remarks about my hair texture.
She pointed out that my hair was shedding significantly, and instead of giving me tips or problem-solving with me the reason my hair was shedding, she persisted with the negative and disparaging comments about my hair. At the start of this appointment, I showed Debora a picture of how I wanted my hair done and it was the exact same style that I had gotten last time (only two braids).It appeared that Debora was in a rush as there were other clients waiting and when I pointed out to her that how she did my braids was not the style I asked for (braids were lop sided and uneven) she became upset, stating that she could not do this style with my hair in its natural state.
I asked her if it would be best for her to blow dry my hair out so she could better accomplish the style and she told me no, that she had other clients and "things to do." Also, when I told her the style looked nothing like the picture she stated with an attitude, "I knew you were going to say that" which implies to me that she knew she was doing a bad job. Again, I chose a hairstyle that I had gotten before and I was pleased with how she'd did it the last time so I wasn't sure what was going on at this appointment.
All I know is that she had a very bad attitude, was unprofessional and appeared to be in a rush to get to her other clients. I was so disappointed that I just let her finish and did not challenge her any further as I was anxious to leave. What's interesting is that at my last appointment she charged me $46 and at this appointment she charged me $56 and I got the same hairstyle and service like before.
I let this go and I did not say anything because it became clear to me that she charges clients more based on how she feels then the actual service, and I made a mental note not to return. I think it's important to highlight that she is quick to get her money but had a very bad attitude when I informed her that her styling was not up to par and requested that she fix it.
I actually went to another hairdresser on this same date to get my hair done as I wanted it and she was able to do the style without issue. I am willing to pay good money to get my hair done and was willing to give Debora a second chance but I was wrong to do this. I felt insulted, disappointed and overcharged and of course will not be returning. I want to discourage other people with natural hair-particularly natural 4c hair-from going to this place as natural hair is not her specialty and I would hate for you to have the same feeling that I did. Debora is very judgmental, unprofessional and will overcharge you.
Perhaps she should stick with doing perms and press and curls and leave the natural hair alone. If you have natural hair PLEASE RUN and save your money, this is not the place for us!

I made an appointment with Duborra to get a flat iron or straightening service. She helped me understand how to take care of my natural hair. However, To my surprise she cancelled my appointment with her because I use to be a friend to someone that she is still friends with. I found it to be unprofessional and immature to cancel my appointment because her friend and I amicably ended a twenty year friendship years ago.
If you are looking for a professional stylist, I would not recommend this salon. It's more like high school. San Diego is a very small city with a limited amount of black hair care professionals. Many people know each other here in this town. Not a business to deal with. She ended up saying that what happened between he friend and I in the past was none of her business, she was right it wasn't. But still she made it her business instead of running a salon business.

My experience at Xplicit was amazing and Deborah is a great stylist. The first thing that I appreciate was her acknowledging her clients when they came. That is the number one thing I look for at a bussiness. She was so professional and was 100% honest about helping me with my hair and styling it. She made me feel comfortable and had my hair looking gorgeous. I definitely would recommend her to anyone I know especially for girls with natural hair.

*Update* I've now been comeing to Ms. D for just a little over ten yrs now. She is still the same wonderful, caring, and talented person then as she is now. In the last few years of my life I've have suffered from not one but two skin disorders one of which is in my scalp and most recently a blood disorder and treatment for that disorder. Ms. D has kept my hair in such a healthy condition no one would ever know.
She is truly knowledgeable and amazing and cares for her clients. Passion isn't something people always have for their profession, but she does. Thanks Ms. D for everything! :

I came to San Diego on vacation and previously had a keratin complex on my hair. Due to the humidity my hair was horrible within the first day. I called DeBorah on Thursday and she was able to do my hair by Friday. My hair looked better than when I first got the keratin complex. DeBorah did a great job and my hair still looks good. I definitely would recommend to anyone wanting a qualified beautician.
