A Cut Above

This is by far the best salon I have ever been to! I was super nervous to chop off over 6 inches of hair and wasn't exactly sure what style I wanted but Kris gave me great advice to what would look best. I trusted her judgement and I'm glad I did! My stylist of 30 yrs retired and recommended A Cut Above. I was not disappointed. Kris was attentive to my concerns, listened to what I wanted and offered valuable advice. I was thrilled with the color and the peek-a-boo look. Everyone in the salon has been warm, friendly and inviting. I loved the final product and have found my new salon for the next 30+ years at least.

I first moved to the town of Waterford 7 years ago from Hartford and was quite reluctant to give up my barber of 18 years. I knew it only made sense to find someone locally so I decided to do a walk in at A Cut Above Hair Design to see if they would be capable of replacing my former barber. That's when I met Melissa Gill which started by far the most unbelievable service I have ever experienced since I started having my haircut.

I would like to say that it is unfortunate that I have been restricted to only be able to give A Cut Above Hair Design 5-star rating when I believe that Melissa and her co-workers deserve a much higher rating. I was impressed with Melissa's work ethic for so many reasons. She always listened to me, she took the time to make sure I understood the changes she suggested to make and that my wife's recommendations were also considered. Melissa was honest, professional, transparent and candid when she needed to be.

She always communicated with me in a timely manner, and I was never left in the dark about anything regarding my haircut. Melissa has always been completely client focused with an aptitude that made me feel like the most important person in the room. I continue to send potential clients to Melissa and her impressive team of co-workers. I cannot recommend Melissa too highly nor say enough good things about her.

There is no hairdresser with whom I can adequately compare her too. Her expertise in his field of work you don't expect to experience nowadays and in it she has clearly demonstrated to me her complete set of skills, capabilities and compassion for the needs of her clients. If you have a need for exceptional hair professionals in the Waterford area, I graciously recommend Melissa Gill and her team, you will indeed be fortunate if you can acquire their services. Paula and the other hair stylists at A Cut Above did a fantastic job for me and my bridesmaids on my wedding day! We had 8 people and they did everyone's hair in just a couple of hours. They created a beautiful style for each person and also did a great job combating the humidity of August. They even let us bring in snacks/drinks to enjoy while we were there!

A Cut Above Hair Design is a truly wonderful salon. Paula, the owner, has created such a warm and welcoming business that you feel at home immediately as soon as you walk through the doors. They have a fun, fabulous and talented staff of stylists that make you look and feel your absolute best! I have been a clients for many years and highly recommend A Cut Above. Would not even think of going anywhere else!

My daughter got married on Halloween and A Cut Above did the wedding party and brought in a make-up artist to do the make-up. She was fabulous (Her name was Tara I believe and she was wonderful). There were 4 people in the wedding party and then of course Mom (me) was included. Everyone of the young ladies looked stunning after they were finished.

What I really liked is they all had long hair and they did an individual look for each of them. They were wonderful! I live in New Haven and I wanted Raven to do my cut and color before the wedding as I wanted her to be familiar with my hair for the wedding. By far the best color I have ever had (I color my hair red with 100% grey and WOW what a beautiful color).

Then Raven was nice enough to fit me in on the Friday before the wedding to do a touch-up. Can't say enough about the A Cut Above but I know I found my new salon. I don't mind the hour drive from New Haven it's worth it.

If I could give 10 stars, I would. I had extensions put in my hair from another salon and it was a nightmare. The girls at A Cut Above spent 6 hours removing extensions and reapplying correctly. Jessica is young, but is naturally talented hairdresser. She does my hair perfectly every time. If you are looking to get extensions, I highly recommend her.

She is very we trained in how to apply so that the hair looks and feels natural. Below is a picture of my hair with the extensions. I'm going to try to find a before pic so you can see the difference between what hairpins like when done correctly by a well trained professional versus how it looks when applied incorrectly.

It was my first time to this salon or any salon in months after Covid-19 and I was here visiting family. I thought the salon was beautiful, the staff and owner were fabulous and I felt comfortable with all their precautions and my stylist, Morgan did a great job. I was very pleased, so much so that I purchased a gift card for my mother to go in as well and again another great haircut on my mother from Morgan. I'd highly recommend this salon, it's not something you'd expect in this tiny little town which I also loved since I'm from down county in Westchester. I was very pleased and I look forward to visiting again for more services my next visit.

Always feel welcomed, sweet staff makes you feel comfortable. Offers complimentary beverages while your service is done. I have never left unhappy with my hair. Michelle is fantastic!

Writing this for my fiance (now wife) who doesn't Yelp. She looked BEAUTIFUL! She wanted natural, and Michele listened. Came up with a beautiful style that matched her and her dress perfectly. Easy to work with, fast but thorough (mani/pedi and hair for 2 people in 2 1/2 hours).

I went and had a full set of acrylic nails put on. The staff was nice, not very personable and didn't talk much the entire time I was there. The white tips of my nails were rubbing off the next day and were already chipped after two days. I will not go back to have my nails done there.

I went in with my niece and saw chelsea, who was awesome. I was really impressed with her manicure and her blow out (until I gave it some time) tho done differently than what I'm used to. I was expecting to blown out in small sections with a brush not rough dried and curled with an iron but the result was pretty so I can't complain. what I will complain about is mine and my niece's polish coming almost completely off in 36 hours. my wavy blow out was flat by dinner and so I sat mildly disappointed for Dinner, wondering what I spent my money on when I could have done it myself. when I first drafted my review I was giving them 5 stars bc they were sweet, offered beer and it's a small town salon, I shouldn't be b____y. but the floor was covered in hair- it wasn't so busy no one could grab a broom. the polishes were old and at the end of the day the services I paid for didn't last. sorry Cut Above, I tried.
