Not if it's properly applied. Damage occurs only when the colorist is not experienced in the technique or knowledgeable about the product. Actually, color can be very beneficial. It adds body and texture to fine, limp hair, making it more manageable. It improves on any dull natural shade and covers gray, to help you look years younger.
You've decided to color your hair for the first time. Congratulations! We know that you have a lot of questions and would like to first discuss a few important things with you. Are you trying to cover gray? Are you tired of mousy looking color? Do you feel your natural color is too dark for you? Too light?
At Rubann, we've been correcting hair color for over seventeen years. You can count on our skill and experience, knowledge of the latest techniques, use of the very best products, and our dedication to restoring health and beauty to your damaged hair. Disasters happen when you decide to color your own hair, have a friend do it, or employ a hairdresser that is not experienced.
Want to change your hair color? Talk to us. We'll listen to you, look carefully at your problem and give you our recommendations on how to get the color results you want, as well as improve the condition of your hair. Our hair coloring services are unbeatable in New York City. Hair color looks its beautiful best when the hair is healthy.

I met with Anne Marie for a transitioning to gray consultation. She looked at my hair, evaluated the condition and grey patterning of my natural hair. She took the time to discuss the process, showed me photographs of before and after clients, so I would have an idea of what I could expect. I am anxiously looking forward to my appointment, to end the grow out drama and embrace the grey goddess within! Lee

My first yelp review ever, had to share with others. If you are thinking of ending the battle with your roots and embracing your silver self - run, do not walk, to Anne Marie! I started going grey in my mid-twenties, and coloring in my thirties, and now in mid-forties was having to color roots every 3 weeks. With dark hair, I felt like I was more often showing grey roots than not.
I searched online for options, since for me just letting the line grow out was not an option. I am so glad I found Anne Marie. She was available by phone after hours and was generous with her time. I sent her a few pics of my roots and she talked me through the process. It was just as she had told me, and I absolutely love the results. I have gotten nothing but compliments.
It took 5 hours and was expensive, but I was prepared. Anne Marie told me it would likely take 3 sessions to get to completely natural. She warned me that given how dark my hair was, it may not be completely white but have some blonde after first session. But the results were better than I'd expected. My hair looked streaked, mostly with white and in some places more blonde.
It has now been a month, and there is more white growing in, but it is fairly blended and does not have the horrible line of demarcation. I am planning to go back to continue the process. The only downside is that the bleaching, which took a long time especially since my hair was colored a very dark brown, did damage my hair. I have somewhat curly hair, with a tendency to frizz, and the top layer is definitely more damaged now.
I have been deep conditioning constantly, which helps but only to a certain extent. However, I would do it again in a heartbeat. I was so grateful to find Anne Marie online, and hope that others will find this and take the plunge.

Ann Marie is a Saint! I must admit that I am a hair color slut. I have been to many famous and expensive salons in NYC. I have have orange/red high lights more times than i want to admit, and I always felt so uncomfortable going back and asking them to fix.and at least listen to what I am trying to accomplish. I came in red and brassy to Ann Marie.
She is so incredibly nice, and has worked with more over the last several months to get me to the color I want to be. I have has not been easy, but she is so kind and patient and always encourages me to come back and tweak things. I love my color now, and I am so thankful that she has taken the time to listen and work with me through the color disasters that I have had.

Do NOT believe the hype about this salon. To her credit she was kind and spent time, and worked hard. I'll give her that. But she does not know what she is doing with hair color, made things ten times worse than they were when I came to her in distress, did things she admittedly did not need to do which jacked up the cost of the treatment, and painted my hair a metallic orange that is so disgusting other salons laughed at it and called it a crime (given the natural strawberry blond color I aiming for).
She left my hair with multiple striped shades of copper, brass, yellow (she called that gold), and didn't even do the roots enough to be concealed. The top of my head looks like someone took paint to it, like the cap of a metallic orange iphone case, and she called this beautiful. I know it may sound like I have an axe to grind, but I kind of do.
The salon she works for insisted I pay for the service a whopping 500, even though I was unhappy (and anyone would be) and they acknowledged the orange problem, and despite the fact that the only reason she stopped coloring is that she said more work would do damage and she had to finish later. In other words, the work was not completed. The salon doesn't seem to understand that when a customer's hair is damaged they do not think it wise to go back to the person who damaged it, and refused to refund my money saying they had completed the service.
That is the equivalent of a surgeon not completing surgery, botching it in the middle, charging you for it, and then saying he will keep the money and suggests you come back for more work. I dont wanna lose another kidney, thank you. I came to her asking her to take out stripes a colorist had put in and make a natural look possible. I showed her a picture to give her an idea of my natural strawberry blond color.
She put more streaks and stripes in. Her approach was obviously to up-color those stripes and add more to conceal them -- but all she had to do was color that lighter stripes darker and match the whole head (I found out later). Instead she gave me an entire head of stripes. In multi-color madness that looks fake and sickening. She also didn't make sure before she added color that it would go on to my hair correctly.
A good colorist would have done a test strand. In addition, the prices she advertises are not the prices she gives. The salon seemed to gloat when I mentioned that and they said, "we do not advertise our prices" -- and because of the funky arrangement between them where she works with them (two businesses in one) -- they claim she is responsible for pricing, and claims they are responsible.
It is the perfect set up. But back to the hair. Which is what matters most, because I don't want other people to go through what I went through. It will now take me four years to grow this out and hundreds of dollars to get it fixed and hundreds to get it maintained. It is so complicated a mess up -- resulting from someone taking repeated stabs in the dark without a proper strategy -- that other hairdressers are actually baffled as to how any correction can be done, and certain things they just cant fix.
When I complained to ann-marie about the stripes all she said was, don't look at the individual strands, look at the whole thing. but anyone looking at my hair is annoyingly staring at the strands that cannot be avoided because they are so mismatched and obviously colored and colored badly. When I contacted her later begging her for help and asking her if I wash it out, she said, "dont do anything to damage the work I have done." She said that I had wasted her time and refused to help me because she said I lied about my natural color (which everyone in my family and professional field would prove her wrong about) -- and was insulting.
She took more interest in the fact that she had done time-consuming work (even though she admitted she didn't need to do all of that), than my satisfaction as a customer. I think Ann Marie is extremely knowledgeable. I think she tries hard. I think she cares. I think it is remarkable how accessible she makes herself (when she likes you). But I also think that she clearly was not careful to make sure that she did not take steps that would do more damage -- and when she did the damage, she should have carefully analyzed what to do next and what she did wrong.
She never should have charged me for work I was so unhappy with. She should have offered suggestions about how to fix it. But most importantly she never should have done it. I didn't need foiling (I found out later), just a simple glaze. I didn't need three layers of color, just the right one. Again, other salons called it a crime. And I cannot in good conscience, despite her knowledge and experience, recommend her to anyone.

After months of agonizing I finally decided to "transition" to silver/gray and was lucky to find AnnMarie. She listened first and then made her suggestions - she was competent and down to earth and let me know she would be available to tweak the color if and when I needed it. It's been 3 months and I haven't been bothered by roots and I get nothing but compliments on my new look. Whenever and wherever I go for blowouts the staff wants to know where I go for color! Kudos to AnnMarie

I had read that people at front desk were unpleasant, and when I arrived for a consultation, the woman there told me that she'd call Anne Marie. Sat there for 20 minutes, with staff passing me----no conversation or acknowledgment. Finally Anne Marie came out and I heard her say to the woman at the front desk: "Why did't you tell me?" The woman asnwered: "I thought you were busy." hmmmm. Went to the back, where Anne Marie showed me pictures of people who were her clients in their transition to gray.
They looked great, and she obviously does a good job. She told me that I should let my hair grow and get a keratin treatment to make it straighter. I told her that I loved my curly hair, after years of straightening it and that it was frizzy because it was pouring out and I was caught in the rain.and that I liked my hair shorter. She criticized my hair color (fair), asked me if I cut it myself (not fair), and texture (I like it).
I would not look good in (nor want) long straight hair----the point is not to have to work so hard, go against what my hair is, and to go natural. She told me that women jet in from Texas to have their hair done by her, but I don't want to look like those women nor is my lifestyle anything like theirs. She was not interested in what I wanted, though, only in what she does. I'm sure she's good at that, but not for me.

Originally I had my hair done at a different salon with the intention of getting an ombre dye job, but when i left, my whole head was bleach blond. Then I went to another salon to get it fixed, but it ultimately made it worse, adding brassy tones that I definitely didn't need. At that point my hair was ruined in 2 ways. In desperation, I google searched "bleach hair disaster and repair nyc" and found Anne Marie of Rubann Salon.
Thank God! I called her right away because I was leaving for paris in 2 days, and she said I could come in right away. Anne Marie was seriously my hero. She spent all afternoon patiently color correcting my hair until we both loved the way it looked. She went above and beyond and would have continued well into the night if she had to. I will definitely be going to her regularly, no question!
Other hair stylists said my hair couldn't be fixed, but Anne Marie fixed it perfectly. I can't wait to get my hair done by her again. Seriously a miracle worker! Since I spent the entire afternoon at the salon I also got a feel for it as a whole and I would trust any of the stylists there to do my hair. Every client had amazing hair when their appointments were through and every hair dresser worked so hard with each and every appointment. It was beautiful, clean and very professional. Good salons are hard to come by here in NYC and this one is worth the trek from Brooklyn.

Anne Marie is amazing! About 3.5 years ago after another colorist turned my hair orange I was desperate for some help. I found Anne Marie online and went to see her with a hat on my head. Not only did she fix the orange hair, but she made my hair the most beautiful shade of auburn imaginable. I've never let anyone else touch my hair since I met Anne Marie and she now colors my mom's and sister's hair as well. I get daily compliments on my hair color and its all thanks to Anne Marie and her incredible talent. Thank you!

At Rubann, both Ann Marie and Rubin are hair color experts. I have been to so many salons; none have offered the hair color expertise they do. I started going to Rubin/ Ann Marie (depending on availability) over 8 years ago and I will never go anywhere else! Even though I moved, I still drive over 100 miles to go to them for hair color!

Last week 02/07/13 Annemarie liberated me from the wretched process of dying my hair. After 30 years of dying my hair I reached a decision that enough is enough. I wanted to enjoy my natural hair color and be free. My roots indicated that my hair was mostly white. My hairdresser and almost all of my friends thought I was crazy. They loved the color I had, it was so becoming, etc. etc.
I just wasn't swayed by anything they said I was determined to do this. I spent a better part of 3 months trying to find someone that could help me. Of the many hair colorists that I saw not one offered a solution. I even sought out the idea of purchasing a wig. I went to two different wig shops, but knew that I couldn't possibly conform to wearing what felt like a hat on my head for several months.
I went back to the Internet and came across Gerard Bollei, one of the few places I hadn't investigated. Their website was very appealing especially when I came across the name"AnnaMarie". So many favorable comments had been posted about her that I made an appointment for a consultation. Finally I found someone that was very encouraging and reassuring about what I was proposing to do.
I immediately knew that I would be in capable hands the moment she explained the process she would take. Anna Marie is truly a remarkable person and an expert in her field. She impeccably matched my roots, my hair felt so silky and soft, not what I expected after bleaching it. I highly recommend Anna Marie and the salon to everyone; you will be in the most capable hands imaginable. Many thanks to you Anna Marie; you made me a liberated woman. Servanda

Anna Marie is truly a genius! Saved my hair and my self-confidence! Before going to Anne Marie I had a horrible experience at a different (very posh) salon. Being new to the city I didn't know where to go. I wanted to get my highlights touched up in my originally blond hair. All I needed was a slight touch-up, but I ended up with a totally different color which was between orange and yellow.
So now not only my highlights were gone, but I had a yellow base. I found Anne Marie online and scheduled an appointment for a free consultation. (For the next day!) I went in with pictures and Anne Marie new in a heartbeat what I was looking for and new exactly what went wrong in the first place. She seemed very confident and ready to solve the problem.
So I stayed and I still don't know how, but she got me back to my regular base color with beautiful highlights in about an hour. I didn't have to wait and she was very good at listening to what I needed. She gave me back my natural-looking, ashy blonde hair. She's a coloring master, I won't ever let anyone else touch my hair again. Lesson learned!

After another stylist left me with hideously dark, virtually Goth-looking hair (I am 58 years old, with extremely pale skin; this is not a good look for me), I was lucky enough to find Rubann's online ad for "hair color disaster repair in NYC." I called them in a panic at 6:30 on a Thursday evening; literally by 7 p.m., Annamarie was at work assessing the problem and getting ready to apply trillions of very fine golden highlights to counteract the darkness.
Even at the end of a long day, she was patient and reassuring and incredibly skilled. I've been coloring my hair for 15 years, with largely mediocre results, but Annamarie instantly transformed the worst color I've ever had into the absolute best. (She also emphasized that I should come back next week if there was anything at all that I didn't love--but I can't get over how totally great it looks.
Even my normally hard-to-impress 21-year-old daughter keeps going out of her way to compliment me.) It was worth it to have a hair disaster to find Annamarie. I can't even imagine going to anyone else from now on.

My best friend from college, who had been going to Anne Marie @ Rubann for years, recommended her to me. and I'm lucky she did! I made an appointment with Anne Marie for highlights and I went to their new location @ 115 57th (b/w Lex and Park). Bottom Line: I am in LOVE with my new color. It's just a bumped-up version of my basic brown however it gives my face warmth and Anne Marie has a real gift for picking out the perfect, natural shade. She's my new gal! :-)
